After weeks of trying to figure what to write about I finally found something that I want to talk about. The source of this discovery is from an unlikely person. My favorite NASCAR driver, Kasey Kahne (now with Hendrick Motorsports #5 car). Kasey is a young, single man who has no children.
The other day he posted on Facebook and Twitter that he saw a lady in the store he was in, breastfeeding he child/baby. Now with him not going into details, it appears that this lady was plopping out her breast for all the world to see. He said it was nasty. And if you want my opinion, I sort of agree.
For those who know me, know that I am a HUGE supporter of breastfeeding. In fact, I am a nursing mom. I will nurse my daughter for as long as she wants or at least her 2nd birthday. I nursed my son for 23 months. I do nurse in public and in a restaurant if I have to, however I cover up. It's not for me, it's for people around me, who don't get that before formula was created this was a baby's main source of food.
There are a few things, however, that I will do not agree with on both sides of the spectrum. I don't like being stared at so I just don't plop my boob out for the world to see when I nurse my child. I know other people don't really want to see it either. So, I have a drape and at least one blanket to cover up, while I nurse. I will find a nice area with hopefully not a lot of traffic. I will and have nursed in a restaurant, where I was sitting, covered up, eating my food while my child was eating as well. I will NOT go to a bathroom. If you won't eat in there then why should my child do that. I change her diaper in there, other people poop, pee and sometimes get sick in the bathroom. So, do you really want me to go to the bathroom to feed my child? I have always said that the first person who asks me to feed my child in the bathroom I will tell them that I will if they bring their food in there with me and eat. If my child is screaming because she is hungry you bet your sweet bippy that I am going to feed her. I always feed my child before I go out to do anything, but sometimes it isn't enough.
I sometimes think that I should wear a sign when I am nursing saying, "If this is bothering you then stop staring!" or "Let's see how cranky and upset you get when someone withholds food from you!"
I have had to nurse in the Wal-Mart near where I live 2 times. The first time it was in the back on a bench by the bathrooms. Employees and customers came and went. Some looked at me, and the majority more than likely didn't know I was there. No one said a thing, except one employee. She wasn't mean she wasn't rude, she just said that if I ever had to nurse again and I WANTED to, I was more than welcome to use the handicapped fitting room (as long as it wasn't being used, obviously). She was very adamant that she wasn't implying that what I was doing was wrong or improper. She just wanted to let me know that it was available and she ended the conversation with when a baby has to eat, a baby has to eat. The next time I was shopping and she got hungry (screaming bloody murder), so instead of going all the way to the back of the store, I went to the fitting room. The baby, myself and my shopping cart went in, I nursed and came out and finished. The women were nice. They thought that my daughter was adorable and told me that they were glad that they could help.
I wasn't told what I needed to do when I nursed my child, the dressing room was offered for future times if I wanted to use it. If you are part of the "disgusted" then more power to you, you have your opinion and I'll keep on breastfeeding in public.
